For the 2008 season, Renault Aftersales Racing is once again hitting the Elf Renault Clio Cup grid with Mardi Gras Motorsport – one of the best-known and respected preparation outfits in British motorsport.
The Silverstone-based team was originally formed in 1987 and has gone on to complete in numerous national racing formulae, including the British Touring Car Championship. During the last two decades, Mardi Gras has developed a strong affiliation with Renault cars and has helped to shape the careers of some of British motorsport’s most successful drivers, thanks to its vast motor racing experience and its ability to prepare its racing cars to the highest standard in the national racing paddock.
Jason Plato, a winner of more than 30 British Touring Car Championship races and the 2001 BTCC Championship Title, won the Renault Spider Championship with Mardi Gras in 1996. Reigning European Touring Car Champion and Triple FIA World Touring Car Champion, Andy Priaulx completed a similar feet at the wheel of a Mardi Gras-prepared Spider three years later with recording an astonishing and unprecedented 13 wins from 13 pole positions and 12 fastest laps.
The new season marks the fourth successive year that the Renault Aftersales division has chosen Mardi Gras to prepare its cars for the Elf Renault Clio Cup and after coming close to winning the competitive one-make championship on numerous occasions, both parties hope that either lead driver Gavin Pyper or young rookie Árón Smith will go one better this time around.
